Alastair Gibson aka Carbon Art
Alastair Gibson was born in 1962 near Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed his education at King Edward VII School before undertaking two years of compulsory national service in the South African Army.
From an early age, Alastair was exposed to the natural beauty of the ocean during annual family holidays to a cottage on the Natal South Coast. These experiences sparked a fascination with marine life and led him to take sculpture classes. This early artistic training shaped the way he observed and interpreted the intricate detail, form and movement of what he describes as “interesting fish”.
Alongside his artistic interests, Alastair developed a passion for motor racing, heavily influenced by his father. With a strong interest in engineering and balance, he moved to Europe with the ambition of building a career in the motorsport industry. This ambition led to a successful twenty-two year career in motorsport, fourteen of which were spent in Formula One. During this time, Alastair worked four years as Lead Mechanic for the Benetton F1 Team and ten years as Race Team Chief Mechanic for the BAR and Honda Grand Prix teams.
Today, Alastair combines the precision of high-performance engineering with his lifelong appreciation for the natural world. Using carbon fibre as his signature medium, he creates anatomically accurate sculptures that reflect both organic form and engineered structure. Many of his pieces incorporate authentic components from Formula One cars, sourced directly from current Grand Prix teams.
Alastair’s work has been exhibited internationally and continues to attract a growing audience of collectors and investors. Now in his fifteenth year as a full-time artist, he is widely recognised as a pioneer in high-end engineered sculpture. Together with his skilled team, he produces a range of works, private commissions and large-scale installations from his bespoke studio, Studio 45, located near Oxford, England.
Before becoming one of the world's most distinctive motorsport artists, Alastair Gibson spent 14 years in Formula One, including 10 years as a Chief Mechanic. During that time, he worked at 167 consecutive Grands Prix, completed 668 pit stops, and was part of teams including Benetton and BAR Honda.Having experienced the intensity of Formula 1 from the inside, Alastair made the bold decision to leave the sport and pursue his passion for art full-time. Today, he transforms genuine Formula 1 components—including carbon fibre, titanium and race-used parts—into extraordinary sculptures and wall art that capture the engineering, speed and innovation of the sport. For Formula 1 enthusiasts, his work offers something truly unique: authentic pieces of racing history, reimagined as collectible contemporary art by someone who lived and breathed the pinnacle of motorsport.
