This Alastair Gibson and Carbon Art 45 sculpture celebrates the beauty of our planet while embracing a more sustainable approach to materials and production. Crafted from recycled carbon fibre, the piece transforms high-performance composite materials into a striking representation of Earth.
In an effort to reduce waste, the sculpture incorporates recycled carbon fibre and aluminium wherever possible. Each globe is uniquely filled with the non-recyclable offcuts and remnants generated during the production process, ensuring that materials which would otherwise be discarded are given new purpose within the artwork itself.
The globe is formed using off-cut 2 × 2 twill carbon fibre layered with recycled chopped strand carbon fibre and laminated to unidirectional carbon fibre, creating a strong yet lightweight shell. A UV-resistant blue tinted gloss coating highlights the distinctive weave pattern while evoking the rich tones of the planet’s oceans. The continents are carefully masked and finished in a graphite grey paint, providing a subtle contrast against the deep blue carbon surface.
The sculpture is mounted on a refined base made from black coated wood and anodised aluminium. A stainless-steel rod angled at 23.5°—the same tilt as Earth’s axis—supports the globe, adding both scientific reference and elegant balance to the piece.
Limited to 44 sculptures plus four artist proofs, this work is designed as a distinctive desk-mounted display piece that combines engineering precision, environmental awareness, and contemporary sculptural design.
