Delighted to welcome the extraordinary carbon fibre sculptures of Alastair Gibson, ‘Carbon Art 45’, to our ever-growing portfolio of exceptional artists!

Westover Gallery are delighted to welcome the extraordinary carbon fibre sculptures of Alastair Gibso ‘Carbon Art 45’, to our ever-growing portfolio of exceptional artists here at Westover Gallery.

Renowned for transforming advanced materials into captivating works of art, Gibson’s pieces fuse innovation, precision, and beauty—resulting in sculptures that are as technically impressive as they are visually striking. Each creation reflects a unique interplay of light, texture, and form, showcasing the remarkable potential of carbon fibre beyond its industrial origins.

Alastair Gibson was born in 1962 near Johannesburg, South Africa. After completing his education at King Edward VII School and undertaking national service, his early exposure to marine life along the Natal South Coast sparked a fascination with form and movement in nature. Sculpture classes during this time helped shape his artistic eye—particularly his interpretation of the intricate detail found in marine species.

With a passion for motorsport inspired by his father, combined with an education in balance engineering, Alastair moved to Europe to pursue a career in racing. This led to an impressive 22-year career in motorsport, including 14 years in Formula One. He spent four years as Lead Mechanic for the Benetton F1 Team and a decade as Chief Mechanic for the BAR and Honda Grand Prix teams.

Today, Alastair brings this rare combination of engineering expertise and artistic vision into his sculptural work. Drawing parallels between high-performance engineering and the natural world, he creates anatomically precise sculptures using his signature medium of carbon fibre—often incorporating genuine, used Formula One components sourced through personal industry connections.

Many of Alastair’s sculptures carry deeper meaning rooted in both nature and motorsport:

Piranha Sculptures: These works reflect the intensity of competitive racing. Much like a feeding frenzy, piranhas collide and compete aggressively for position—mirroring the high-pressure, high-speed chaos at the start of a race.

Shark Sculptures: Sharks symbolise the ultimate performance machine. Evolved over millions of years for efficiency and precision, they parallel the engineering of elite racing cars—both designed for speed, control, and dominance. Each sculpture includes an accompanying information sheet, offering collectors insight into the concept, materials, and story behind the piece.

The exclusivity of Alastair’s work is reflected in both materials and process. Carbon fibre is a premium material, and each sculpture involves advanced engineering techniques, labour-intensive handcrafting, and the expertise of highly skilled laminators. Pieces are made largely in-house, in small batches, and often to order—resulting in longer lead times due to the complexity and demand on materials also used in industries such as Formula One, aviation, and green energy.

Now in his fifteenth year as a full-time artist, Alastair Gibson is widely recognised as a pioneer in high-end engineered sculpture. His work has been exhibited worldwide and continues to attract a growing audience of collectors and investors. From his bespoke Studio 45 near Oxford, he and his team undertake a range of projects, from private commissions to large-scale installations.

We are proud to present a curated collection of these remarkable works, available to view both in the gallery and online. We warmly welcome discussions about the collection and are pleased to offer bespoke commission opportunities for those seeking something truly unique.
