Never Tell Me The Odds

A bold, abstract Star Wars artwork by Mark Davies

When it comes to Star Wars, some moments are so iconic that they need little introduction. With Never Tell Me The Odds, Mark Davies explores one of the saga’s most memorable images, capturing Han Solo encased in Carbonite in a striking artwork that combines texture, atmosphere and expressive abstract detail.

This latest piece from Mark’s Lost in Hollywood collection showcases a different side of his artistic approach. Rather than creating one of his intensely detailed cinematic scenes, he has embraced a more abstract style, using layered textures, shapes and tonal contrasts to evoke the drama of the moment.

It’s a technique Mark has returned to occasionally throughout his career, and one he particularly enjoys for the freedom it offers. Working directly onto canvas allows him to be more expressive, building the image through texture and movement rather than relying solely on fine detail. In this case, the original canvas is a genuine part of the creative process, making the finished artwork all the more special.

Frozen in time

At the heart of the composition is Han Solo, trapped in Carbonite, his unmistakable expression frozen in a moment that has stayed with Star Wars fans for generations.

Mark remembers watching the film as a child and finding the scene genuinely unsettling. There is something particularly chilling about seeing such a familiar character immobilised and helpless, and that sense of unease translates beautifully into this artwork.

The metallic nature of the Carbonite lends itself perfectly to a monochromatic palette, with black, white and a carefully balanced range of tones bringing depth and definition to the figure. The result is bold and dramatic, allowing Han’s expression to remain the unmistakable focal point.

But Mark didn't want the central image to tell the entire story on its own.

Look a little closer…

Surrounding Han is a background featuring key characters involved in the plan to imprison him. Unlike some of Mark’s more subtle, detail-driven works, these references are deliberately recognisable, giving fans plenty to enjoy without distracting from the powerful central image.

The understated title, scrawled across the artwork, adds another thoughtful finishing touch, complementing the textures and reinforcing the raw, expressive character of the piece.

It's a wonderful balance between abstraction and recognisable cinematic imagery: an artwork that makes an immediate impact while rewarding closer inspection.

Mark has always loved creating pieces inspired by Star Wars, and Never Tell Me The Odds is no exception. Its monochromatic palette and textural detail give it a distinctive character, while the different formats offer their own interpretation of the original composition. For those who appreciate an extra level of artistry, the hand-embellished finish brings another dimension to the work.

At Westover Gallery, we love how this piece captures such an unforgettable movie moment through a completely different artistic lens. It’s bold, expressive and unmistakably Star Wars.

And as for the title? Well, Han Solo never was one to let the odds get in his way!
