Mackenzie Thorpe is one of Britain’s most beloved and internationally acclaimed contemporary artists, celebrated for his emotive and atmospheric paintings that speak directly to the heart. His work is grounded in authenticity, tenderness, and a persistent message of hope, often exploring themes of love, childhood, memory, and the human spirit.

Born in 1956 in the industrial town of Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, Mackenzie was the eldest of seven children. His early years were shaped by the rhythms of a post-war working-class life and the shipyards that employed his family. Yet even amid the grit and steel of his surroundings, the seeds of creativity were sown. Encouraged by a friend to pursue his passion, he enrolled at Cleveland College of Art and Design and later earned a Fine Arts degree from London’s Byam Shaw College of Art.
Thorpe’s signature philosophy, “Art from the Heart,” combines tenderness with fervor, and his work spans the accessible charm of Square Sheep and Duffle Coat Boys to the poignant introspection of isolation, struggle, and hope. Many of his most moving pieces are rooted in the landscapes, skies, and streets of his youth, capturing the poetry of the North East with a dreamlike poignancy.
His work has been celebrated worldwide, exhibited across the UK, USA, Japan, and Australia, and collected by figures including JK Rowling, the late Queen Elizabeth II, and Tom Hardy. Thorpe’s vision extends beyond the canvas: monumental sculptures, charitable projects, and commissions—including the 2019 Welcome to Yorkshire Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show—bring his art to communities and public spaces.
Through every brushstroke and sculpture, Mackenzie Thorpe carries a simple, enduring belief:
"I feel it is my job to bring love through my work."
