Mark has drawn from a rich wealth of references across all three films, creating a piece that’s packed with intensity and detail—one that really rewards closer inspection. He felt strongly that the DeLorean had to be featured; it’s such an iconic form, and from every angle it delivers that unmistakable sense of nostalgia and sheer visual impact. When developing Great Scott in a portrait format, Mark focused on building two key areas of interest—each strong enough to stand alone, but even more powerful when experienced together.

A favourite line from the film, “Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads,” became the foundation for the composition. From there, Mark has constructed a dramatic desert scene, with a road cutting through the landscape as a storm rolls in toward the time machine. The DeLorean is positioned spectacularly, its open doors echoing the shape of a bird about to take flight. There’s a real sense of energy here, brought to life through bold colour, atmosphere, and those subtle narrative touches—like the chicken fleeing from an approaching coyote, or the parked vehicles that cleverly nod back to his celebrated Petrolheads piece.

Above this, the storm clouds create the perfect stage for the film’s characters. Marty and Doc naturally take centre focus, but Mark has ensured that every character has their moment—even the much-loved “Clock Tower Lady.” The lightning detail adds another layer of drama, while the uppermost section, featuring Planet Vulcan and the flying train, really elevates the entire scene.
